Evergreen coniferous dioecious shrub from the cypress family, up to 3 m high, with gray-brown peeling bark. Leaves (needles) sessile, linear-subulate, rigid, triangular, arranged in whorls of three needles each. Male flowers are yellowish, sessile, collected in earrings, female – green cones. After fertilization, the three upper scales of the cones swell and grow, forming a cone berry (false berry); first green, then black, with a bluish bloom.
 
The fruits contain essential oil, consisting of cadinel, camphene, pinene, crystallizing juniper camphor and other substances, a large amount of sugar, resin, yellow pigment uniperin, tannin, pectins, wax, ascorbic, acetic, malic, formic acids; Mineral salts, Trace elements. The needles contain a lot of Ascorbic acid, Essential oil, Phytoncides, in the bark – Tannins.
